Not sure about the book, but it’ll be a great movie

I had an odd experience with the last book I read. Once I finished reading it I couldn’t help think that is would be better as a movie.  Now normally I read books and just enjoy them without thinking of their potential as a movie but this one was different.

The book was Airman by Eoin Colfer.  I love Eoin Colfer’sbooks – I’ve read most of them and Artemis Fowl is high on my lists of  books that I make people read.  He’s a brilliantly clever author and really funny.  But Airman I was a little disappointed in – it wasn’t quite what I was expecting when I picked it up and while the overall story was good I just didn’t quite get into it in the way I normally do with his books.

That being said I think that someone should option the film rights – it’s a story that I think would work really well as a movie – plenty of action. I really think that the flight sequences would work so much better with the visual.

Maybe I’m being a bit unfair on the book – as I said I liked the over all story I just don’t think that it was really one that clicked with me – it should have, a dashing airman, castles, a princess, menacing evil knights – it had all the ingredients but I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected to.

Still I love Eoin Colfers books and I can’t wait to read his 6th book of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and will happily read anything he writes (hell I’m following him on Twitter). We can’t like everything people do I guess!

Global Depression

Every time you turn on the TV News, Open a newspaper, or log onto a news website there’s some doom & gloom story about how the economy worldwide is screwed and that we’re all going to hell in a handcart.  Well this is fair enough – they’re the media it’s their job to sensationalise and convince us we’re all doomed!

What I find really interesting and really sad is just how many people are struggling with all sorts of issues and how many people really aren’t happy.  I must say I’m disappointed not because I think people should ‘harden up’, far from it but because I know so many people who had a rough 2008.

Last year really wasn’t a good year for so many people. I had an absolutely rubbish year – just about all year was better off forgotten.  Several people I know also had a year filled with more downs than ups.  My dear Internet friends who I’ve gotten to know over my years as a regular on a forum also suffered a lot – there were car accidents, miscarriages, separations, other types of accidents & more depression & anxiety related conditions than you could shake a stick at.  Several times late last year I said ‘Really, when will this year be over already?’

So along comes 2009, I like many were full of hope – surely, SURELY this year had to be better than last, it just had to, and damn it was going to be!  This positive attitude of mine lasted all of about 2 weeks, when it took a sustained beating from a little thing they call ‘restructuring’ fast forward 6 weeks (that’s right they left us hanging that long) and Hollis boils I don’t have a job.  It’s now nearly 2 months later & I’ve had 2 weeks work in that time.

Apart from a couple of times where I did a nice number in wallowing in self pity, I’ve managed to cope with all this up heval pretty well.  But again I know so many people who’ve got real shit going on in their lives, Separations, ailing parents, illness, job loss, possible infertility and again more depression & anxiaty disorders than you can shake a stick at.

Of course not everyone I know is miserable! A good friend of mine just bought a house with her partner & we’re going to the house warming this Saturday.  But I really do wonder when things are going to even out – maybe next year is the year…

And finally Kneazle discovers blogging!

Hi everyone!

I’m Kneazle welcome to my blog.  Over the coming weeks & months I’ll be entertaining & delighting you all with my sparkling wit – well I’ll give it a go at least.

So a bit about me. I’m 29, I live in Auckland, New Zeland. I’m currently unemployed having been made redundant a couple of months back, so I’m spending my time job hunting (yuck!) studying (I’m a part time student), working on my novel & finding new and improved ways to procrastinate.

For those who are wondering where the handle comes from – a Kneazle (silent K) is a creature from the world of Harry Potter and is described in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them’ as ‘A small cat like creature with flecked, speckled or spotted fur, outsize ears and a tail like a lion’s, the Kneazle is intelligent, independent and occasionally aggressive.’ Kneazle has been my default handle for a few years now after a friend challenged me with thinking of a handle that was Harry Potter related but obsqure.  As you’ve probably figured out I love books – Harry Potter is clearly a favourite (the fact that I have the charity books should be proof enough) but I read almost anything and will talk about that a lot on here.

So that’s me!
